Rayon is a general term used for regenerated cellulose fibres produced by processing plant-derived cellulose and reforming it into textile fibres.
Depending on the production method, rayon can provide a soft hand feel, fluid drape, good moisture absorption and a smooth or lustrous appearance.
Because some rayon materials can resemble silk in appearance and drape, rayon has historically sometimes been described as “artificial silk”. However, rayon and natural silk are fundamentally different materials.
Are Rayon and Viscose the Same?
Not exactly.
Rayon is a broader category of regenerated cellulose fibres, while viscose is one of the most widely used types and manufacturing processes within the rayon family.
For this reason, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably in everyday textile language, although they are not technically identical.
